Question: Hello, my name is Mark and I have a question to ask, obviously, sorry to be so stupid. Ok, my computer's cd-rom drive has stopped working (i think), becuase when i put in a cd to play like an audio cd or a game cd, it will open and close but when you put a cd into the drive you can hear it spinning but nothing happens after that. There is no autoplay that comes up, and the program or audio music files do not play even when you go in through MyComputer and double click on the file and everything and try to go in through the file and try to hit play by right clicking, it does not work. I do not know what to do... Should I try taking the cd-rom drive out and/or replacing it? Also if that is the case will you please tell me how to take it out please?

Thank you for all your time. I will be making a donation...

THanks, Mark

Question: Hello. I doubt you can answer this, but I'm almost out of options.

I have two computers. One of them is hooked directly to high speed DSL, and the other is not. I have had a home network between the two for months now, so I can share files, printer and also the DSL internet connection.

On the PC that is networked but not directly into the modem, I have had a great internet connection, but lately, it has stopped on some websites.

The computer that is sharing the connection is extremely fast and loads every single website, but in the last few days, the second computer seems to have stopped loading certain sites.

It won't load MSN.com, Microsoft.com, Doteasy.com, Download.com and many others, but google, altavista, youtube and alot of other sites load just fine.

I even formatted and reloaded WIN XP on the second PC, only to find that I can't even activate my copy of windows over the network because it won't access MSN.com or any of the microsoft related sites (as well as a handful of others).

Those same sites load just fine on the first PC. (the one I am using right now).

This PC is using ONECARE, fomr microsoft, but has been for quite some time. This has never been a problem and I have checked all network settings and enabled all sharing.

Now that my second PC has a fresh copy of XP, I need to update it and install SP2, but without being able to access MSN.com, I am totally stuck. What do I do?

The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert the 'TrayApp' disk or click OK. If I do that the Windows installer screen comes up and then that box pops back up. I've tried deleting windows installer under programs but that didn't work. Please help.

Question: We were given an older computer with Windows 98 (I think; it's been a while since I've looked at it). It's really slow, full of needless junk, and takes forever to boot up. There is still some software on it from the previous owners. It also gives a ton of error messages on startup that you have to keep clicking "ok" on. How do I clean it off properly? I'd like to just do a full clean install, but I don't have any of the software for it. I do have an XP disc, so can I use that and just do a clean install? How do I do this correctly? This is just going to be used for my four year old to do some little games on. I don't think there would be an easy way to hook it up to go online, as I have cable internet and only one cable modem on my computer. This hand-me-down computer is probably too old anyway! Any help or advice on this would be great.

Question: I work for a business that purchased a licensing fee for a computer billing program, the person who created this software owns the copyright etc.

Here is the question, my employers even though they signed a contract and usage for 99 years have decided to part ways from this program. We have given proper notice and even paid for a month of service we did not need or use. When we purchased the new software that company installed a Sonicwall it is there policy. The owner/"maintenance" provider can no longer access his program remotely. He states he needs to come and copy his "source code"because we are not computer savy he insist he has to have this. We are a little nervous because we don't know if he can copy new files, load a virus, or just copy all of our info all together. Any thoughts??

Question: I need to be able to set 50-100 sheets of handwritten notes or typed documents onto a scanner and scan all the documents into a computer. Then, be able to call up each page, review each page and highlight identified words or sentences in yellow (or some other color that when the page is printed out the highlighted are can be read)or use computer Post It Notes and then cut/paste that page and place that page under an appropriate category on my computer.

I am researching fast scanners but for now I am using a flat bed HP scanner and scanning one single page at a time (very time consuming) and it gives me 10 choices to save:
TIF (.tif)
Windows BTmap (.bmp)
DCX file(.dox)
JPEG file (.jpg)
Flashpix file (.fpx)
Image Files
All files (*.*)
PDF file (.pdf)

I checked out all of them and none lets me be able to highlight certain words on a page or put a post it note on the page.

Is there another way I can accomplish what I am trying to do?

Thank you so much

Question: I recently read one of your answers regarding setting up a old hard drive as a slave. I feel I am pretty knowledgeable with work with computer hardware. So I have a few queations,
1. You used a term IDE cable, what does IDE stand for?
2. I have an olde hard drive with Windows 98 and anewer old running on XP. Can I still use the older as a slave without changing it to XP?
3. Is there a limit to the number of hard drive running as slaves to one XP system?

Thank you

Question: I am running Windows media center edition on a fast laptop.
Suddenly when I go to save or open a file from any program the folders are not listed alphabetically by default. They seem to be listed by last modified.
I can right click in the file browser window and select sort by name but it doesnt even remember this for next time.
This is very annoying as I have a lot of folders and subfolders.

Can you think what could have changed it or how to set the default back to 'name' for all windows applications.

Thanks

Question: I'd like to try 98 again, because I tried to use my son's PC with XP on it, and install some of the software that I bought for 98 SE. The software I'm using with my PC is - Easy CD Creator, Office XP PRO, and Cakewalk Pyro 2004. Like I said earlier, I'm not hooked up to the internet with this PC. I just use it for my own music, which I write the words with the office pro, record the music with Pyro, and burn with the easy creator, and of course which uses the Cd-Rom burner, but it doesn't appear to work with XP. What about this GetDataBack Data Recovery Software that I looked up on line? I was thinking of maybe trying that... Would it be cheaper to just go with the new OS like you say?
Thanks,

Question: Hello and thank you;

I have two PC's with problems. They are not connected to the internet. They both had viruses, and what I did was, to use a Windows 95 floppy disk to delete and I then created a primary DOS partition. I formatted the hard drive and used the startup disk to get them back. One PC I could not boot back up, with Windows 98 SE. The other I did get it running again with Windows 98 SE, but it has issues...

First is- when it starts up-this is the message...

Can not find device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application. The windows registry or SYSTEM.INI file refers to this device file but this device file no longer exists. If you deleted this file on purpose, try uninstalling the associated application using its uninstalled or setup program. If you still want to use this application associated with this device file, try reinstalling that application to replace the missing file. Vnetbios.vxd

If I press "ENTER" twice it will start windows, but there is only 16 colors and no audio. When I look in the System properties and under the device manager, I see 2 yellow exclamation points on - CD-ROM Controller, and Mitsumi CD-ROM Controller with double speed drive. There is also, an exclamation in "other devices" category with the PCI Ethernet controller specified.
I've tried to reinstall the drivers for these devices with no result... I can not get any audio to work, that's my biggest concern...

Thank you for listening and possibly helping,
Rich

Question: I have a Dell C610 laptop and I recently installed Windows Me due having to put in a new hard drive. Everything seemed to reinstall fine. The problem I having is that the windows display is only half the size of my screen. I have tried to all the obvious to get it to fit the screen. I have went completely through all my options in control panel and I have right clicked and went to properties with no luck. When I go to the properties screen and settings, I am unable to move the resolution scale, plus it is only showing 12color when my PC show much more than that. Am I missing a driver? Do I need to do something in the BIOS? Any Ideas?

Yet another question,
I looked up the memory cards and they have one at best buy for 89.00 for a 512 card. it is a viking. they also have one for 512 memory for 159 dollars. this one is PNY. What is the difference? I am going to buy one and dont mind spending the extra money but I would like to know which is the best. I would rather spend more money and get a good working card than a crappy one. Thanks a lot for answering my questions!

So i turned the computer off and it rebooted like normal but when my desk top comes up all i have is my background picture, no icons or start button or anything, and i cannot put a disk in and run a program either. what can i do to fix this?
